TRANSFIGURATION SUNDAY

Text * Matthew 17:1-9

Title * SACRED SPACE

 INTRODUCTION

  1. What makes something sacred?
  2. Have you ever thought of a day as being sacred?

1.      WHAT MAKES SOMETHING SACRED IS ITS ESSENCE

A.        Like Peter we try to manufacture our sacredness – Matthew 17:4 - Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.”

B.        We are made sacred not by our efforts, but by being transfigured – Titus 3:5 “he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit”

2.      ARE WE BORN SACRED OR DO WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING?

A.      We are all born sinners – Romans 3:10 - “There is no one righteous, not even one”

B.       Only through faith in Christ can we become holy. – Hebrews 10:10 “And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

3.    OUR SACRED SPACE IS CREATED BY THE TOUCH OF JESUS

A.      Jesus touches us through His Word. – 2 Peter 1:19 “And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.”

B.       Jesus touches through His presence in us – Ephesians 2:22 “And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.”

4.    WHAT EFFECT DOES THE SACRED HAVE ON OUR LIVES?

A.        It causes true worship in us – Matthew 17:6 – “When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified.”

B.        It causes us to tell others about its source – Matthew 17:9 - As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus instructed them, “Don’t tell anyone what you have seen, until the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”
