Text * Genesis 3:1-21
Other Readings for the day * Romans 5:12-19 & Matthew 4:1-11
Title * Satan, the Subtle Serpent
INTRODUCTION 1. The story of creation shows God’s wonderful and gracious love for us. 2. It is amazing that Satan could tempt Adam and eve into rebellion against God
THE SUBTLE SERPENT SEDUCES 1. It is important that we understand Satan’s nature – John 8:44 “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” 2. Satan is the master of disguise and comes to us in many different ways – 2 Cor. 11:14 “And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.” 3. Satan leads people to doubt God’s Word – Genesis 3:1 “Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God really say, 'You must not eat from any tree in the garden'?"
THE SNAKE’S SEDUCTIONS SUCCEED 1. Satan is so successful that there is not a person who has not sinned – Eccl 7:20 “There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins.” 2. In demonic pride, he considers no one off limits, even Jesus. – Matthew 4:1 “Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil.” 3. Satan is constantly looking for his next victim – 1 Peter 5:8-9 “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”
CLOSING THOUGHTS 1. Through God’s grace Satan has no power over us – 2 Timothy 4:18 “The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” 2. God has given us spiritual weapons to fight Satan – Ephesians 6:11 “Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes.” 3. When we fall into Satan’s trap we can find forgiveness in Jesus – Ephesians 1:7 “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace.”
