Sermon Text:  Philippians 2:5-11

 THE NATURE OF A SERVANT

INTRODUCTION

A.      How great it would have been to be in Jerusalem to see the Triumphal Entry

B.       Palm Sunday is a perfect example of Christ’s obedient service to the Father

1.      CHRIST WAS THE MODEL SERVANT

A.      Christ did not boast of His divine nature. Philippians 2:6 “Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped”

B.       Christ showed self-renunciation, even to death on a cross. Philippians 2:8 “And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross!”

2.    THROUGH OUR BAPTISM CHRIST IS IN US

A.      Paul tells us His attitude should be in us – Humility – Philippians 2:5 “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus”

B.       The Bible tells us that His Cross should be on us – Suffering - Matthew 16:24 “Jesus said to his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

3.      IT IS OUR DUTY TO SERVE AND OBEY

A.      God commands us to serve Him – Deuteronomy 10:12 – “And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul”

B.       God calls us to serve others – Galatians 6:10 – “As we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.”
